Learn to adjust your mechanical disc brakes to ensure proper function and a quiet ride.
Tools Needed:
- 5mm hex wrench or Allen key
Procedure:
-
Adjust Cable Tension:
- Locate where the cable attaches to the caliper arm.
- Loosen the bolt and pull the cable tight with your fingers.
- Secure the bolt, ensuring the cable is tight but not overly so.
-
Center the Caliper:
- Loosen the caliper bolts on the fork or frame slightly.
- Apply gentle pressure to the caliper, allowing the outside pad to contact the rotor.
- Lightly tighten the caliper bolts.
- Spin the wheel and listen for any rubbing.
- Lock the caliper in place by squeezing the brake lever and tightening the caliper bolts up fairly tight, but not tight enough to cause damage.
-
Adjust Inside Pad Position:
- Use a 5mm wrench through the spokes to access the inside pad adjustment.
- Tighten the adjustment until the pad contacts the rotor.
- Back off slightly to create a small gap between the pad and rotor.
- Spin the wheel and check for rubbing. If there is rub, back the inside pad adjustment off one click at a time and spin to check for rubbing again.
-
Fine-Tune Lever Feel:
- Adjust personal preferences for brake lever throw using barrel adjusters.
- Turn counterclockwise to increase tension, clockwise to decrease.
- Lock in the adjustment by turning the inner ring.
-
On-the-Trail Adjustments:
- Barrel adjusters are handy for real-time tension adjustments during rides.
Make sure to test the brakes after adjustments and check regularly for optimal performance. Adjustments can be tailored to personal preferences, ensuring a comfortable and efficient braking experience.
