Mid-Drive Error Code 04 and 05 - Throttle

Throttle Error

Error 04 and Error 05 typically indicates an issue with the throttle system of your Bafang mid-drive electric bike. The throttle allows you to control the bike's speed using the thumb lever. When this error occurs, your bike may not respond to throttle input, causing either consistent motor response (throttle stuck) or a lack of motor response. To resolve this issue, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Turn Off the Bike: Start by turning off the electric bike and ensure the bike is in a safe and stable position.

  2. Inspect the Throttle: Carefully examine the throttle lever for any visible damage, loose connections, or signs of wear and tear. Follow the throttle wire down to the main bundle of connections behind your handlebars and look for loose or frayed wires. The diagram below will show you how the electronic components connect on your mid-drive bike.

  3. Check for Loose Connections: Inspect the wiring connections between the throttle and the communication harness which runs to the controller. Ensure the plug is securely connected (when disconnected, the connection reveals a yellow plug). If you find any loose or dirty connections, clean them and reconnect.

  4. Test the Throttle: Turn the bike on and test the throttle. Pay close attention to how it responds. If the error persists and you have no motor response while using the throttle, move on to step 5. If the error persists and your motor has consistent response even when you are not using the throttle, move on to step 6.

  5. Reset the Controller: Some throttle errors can be resolved by resetting the controller. To do this, turn off the bike and disconnect the battery. Wait for a few minutes, then reconnect the battery and turn the bike back on. Test the throttle again.

  6. Disconnect the Throttle: If your motor runs consistently, the throttle might be stuck in a 'high position', meaning it is signaling the motor to run when you are not actively using the throttle. Power the bike off, follow the throttle wire down to it's connection with the communication harness, disconnect (you should see a yellow plug), and power the bike back on. If the motor is now off and only powers while pedaling and using Pedal Assist, carry on to the next step to replace the throttle.
  7. Replace the Throttle: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it may be necessary to replace the throttle. Contact QuietKat's customer support to acquire a replacement throttle. If you are still within your warranty period, or have the Extend warranty, this will be covered. If you are outside of your warranty period, we will send you a quote for the replacement part(s).
