Shifting System Breakdown

Review components that make up the shifting system, which allows your bike to shift smoothly through gears

  1. Handlebar Shifter Inspection:

    • Examine the shifter on the handlebars for any visible damage, bumps, or dings.
    • Ensure that the shifter is in good condition.
  2. Shift Sensor Check:

    • Follow the cable from the shifter to the shift sensor (if included on your bike) and inspect it for damage.
    • Verify that the shift sensor is not smashed or damaged, as it plays a crucial role in stopping the motor during gear shifts.
  3. Cable Inspection:

    • Examine the cable for any visible damage as it travels down to the frame.
    • Inspect the cable where it enters the frame, even though the internal components cannot be seen.
  4. Rear Derailleur and Cassette Inspection:

    • Check the rear derailleur for damage, rocks, bends, or kinks that may affect its performance.
    • Gently move the cassette to inspect for any visible damage, cracks, or broken cogs.
  5. Chain Examination:

    • Inspect the chain for any signs of damage, bends, or kinks.
    • Examine the front chainring, especially the teeth, for any bending, damage, or breakage.
  6. Tuning the Derailleur:

    • Once all components are visually inspected, proceed to tune the derailleur to ensure proper functionality.
    • Refer to the Derailleur Adjustment or Limit Screw Adjustment instructions for direction on tuning your derailleur.
